Parents in the school participation council focus on policy matters important to parents and students. They sometimes organize events. In the school participation council, parents discuss with the mbo school. They can organize surveys, think about educational developments, and give advice to the school, both asked and unasked. The exact tasks of the school participation council depend on agreements with the school. These are recorded in the school participation council statute and can be as broad as the council wants.<\/p>\n
The school participation council is only compulsory for agricultural training centers. At ROC schools it is not compulsory. The law says mbo must set up a school participation council if at least 25 parents want it. Parents have influence on whether the council exists. If 25 parents want a school participation council, they must sign a request to the school. Note: parents who sign do not have to join the council themselves. But they can. If not enough want to join, an election is held.<\/p>\n
Besides the school participation council, mbo has two other councils: the student council and the works council. The student council gathers input from students, the works council gathers input from staff. At the yearly meeting with the school board, these two councils share their input. If there is a school participation council, it also sits in this meeting.<\/p>\n
Every school must have a student council. Any student can join. The student council discusses and monitors what happens at the school.<\/p>\n

Research shows that mbo students do better when their parents are involved. What does involvement mean? It is different for every child. Your child shows the limit between support and interference. Does your child want you to help prepare important talks? Or work together sometimes? Ask your child what they like and listen. It is also important to build trust with your child’s mentor.
