If a student is enrolled at one school and takes part of the education at another school, this is called symbiosis education. The student visits two schools. This can be needed because the student takes certain subjects that are only available at a certain school or gets specific guidance or support.<\/p>\n

Transition period<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Also when a student moves from special primary education<\/a> to regular primary education, symbiosis education can be used as a transition period. This way the student can get used to a regular class. Afterwards, a final decision about the move can be made.<\/p>\n

Exam and practical subjects<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In special secondary education, symbiosis education can be useful for students who want to take specific practical subjects or certain exam subjects. At many special secondary education schools, it is not possible to take exams on the higher general secondary education or pre-university level. It is also possible that a student cannot take certain subjects at every level. Symbiosis education with a regular school can then be a solution. For special secondary education students who take the national exam at the adult education<\/a>, symbiosis education between the special secondary education school and the adult education is also a possibility. When it involves practical subjects, there can also be cooperation with an institution for education and vocational education.<\/p>\n

Organization<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If symbiosis education is chosen, the student is already enrolled at one school. The enrolling school makes agreements with the symbiosis school about the goal, the program, and the funding. These are recorded in a symbiosis agreement. This states clearly the agreements and responsibilities of both schools.<\/p>\n

Rules<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Funding of education in the Netherlands is based on the number of students enrolled at a school. Actually, students can only be enrolled at one school. Symbiosis education is therefore subject to some rules. These rules and guidelines are stated on the website of the Education Inspectorate<\/a>. For example, the student may not take more than 60% of lessons at another school. A student may take full-time education at another school for a maximum of 3 months as a bridge. There is no minimum number of hours the student must follow. There must also be a detailed symbiosis agreement between the schools.<\/p>\n

Agreements with each other<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Symbiosis is a good way to offer students a tailored education supply. This can offer opportunities for children but also requires something from students. Students deal with different schools and classes, and it can be difficult to arrange. It requires good coordination between the schools but also with the student and parents.
