Bullying is a complex problem. There is often no quick fix. As a parent you expect the school to take the problem seriously, to listen to you and your child, and to take action against bullying. Most schools have a bullying policy or bullying protocol that explains what a school must do in a bullying situation. A school cannot just watch without doing anything. what are the school’s duties against bullying?<\/h3>\n

Schools must create a safe place for all students. This safe place helps children grow well. This means a student can be themselves, does not have to be afraid, and feels safe. Bullying causes an unsafe situation. That is why the school must fight bullying. The school must follow these rules:<\/p>\n

  1. There is a clear contact person for parents and students.<\/li>\n
  2. Someone is responsible for the bullying policy. This person is usually not the same as the bullying contact person.<\/li>\n
  3. There must be a safety policy that also focuses on bullying.<\/li>\n
  4. The safety at school must be monitored.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    bullying contact person for parents and students<\/h3>\n

    The bullying contact person at school supports you and your child. Together you look at the situation and find what actions can solve the bullying problem. The contact person discusses with you and looks for solutions. There may be other staff who can help. The contact person can refer you to an external trusted person or the police. It is good to know that the bullying contact person does nothing you do not want. They are there to support you as a parent and your child.<\/p>\n

    anti-bullying policy coordinator<\/h3>\n

    The school must make sure someone is responsible for the bullying policy. This anti-bullying policy coordinator knows how students feel about safety and knows about incidents and possible risks at school.     Although schools do not have to have an anti-bullying protocol, most schools do have one. This anti-bullying protocol says the following:<\/p>\n

    • How a school must act when bullying happens. This is not only to stop bullying but also to prevent it.<\/li>\n
    • How to recognize bullying behavior.<\/li>\n
    • Who parents can contact if their child is bullied and what steps the school must take.<\/li>\n
