Reading, math or concentrating takes more effort than for classmates. That can be frustrating for your child and for you as a parent. But how do you know if this is a learning problem or a learning disorder? And what can you do then?<\/p>\n","inhoud":"<h3>What is the difference between a learning problem and a learning disorder?<\/h3>\n<p>The terms \u2018learning problems&#8217; and \u2018learning disorder&#8217; seem similar but do not mean the same.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Learning problems<\/strong> often arise due to circumstances. For example if a child has been sick for a long time, has a difficult period or receives too little support. With extra explanation or help at school these problems usually disappear or decrease.<\/li>\n<li>Some learning problems are permanent. We then call this a <strong>learning disorder<\/strong>. They relate to the way your child&#8217;s brain processes information. Examples are dyslexia (problems with reading and spelling), dyscalculia (problems with math) and non-verbal learning disorders (NLD). With the right support, children with a learning disorder can learn well, but they often need a different approach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How do you recognize learning problems?<\/h3>\n<p>Every child learns at their own pace. However, there are signals that can point to learning problems or sometimes a learning disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Pay attention for example to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>great difficulty with reading, writing or math;<\/li>\n<li>low self-confidence with tasks at school;<\/li>\n<li>quickly distracted or difficulty planning;<\/li>\n<li>problems with reading comprehension or remembering information;<\/li>\n<li>tension or stomach ache before school days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you recognize these learning issues in your child? Talk about it with the teacher or mentor. Together you can see if extra help or investigation is needed. <a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/contact\/\">Or contact us for advice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>How does the school help with learning problems?<\/h3>\n<p>The school must investigate what your child needs. Does the school think your child has a learning problem or learning disorder? Then the teacher will talk about this with you.<\/p>\n<p>Together you look at which help suits the learning problem. This can be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>extra guidance in the class;<\/li>\n<li>practice with special materials or software;<\/li>\n<li>extra time on tests;<\/li>\n<li>or guidance by a specialist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Does your child need more help than the school can normally provide? Then there is additional support. The school then makes a plan to help your child. This is called the <a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/en\/development-perspective-plan-at-school\/\">development perspective plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Which learning problems or disorders are most common?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dyslexia:<\/strong> difficulty with reading, spelling and writing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dyscalculia:<\/strong> difficulty with math and arithmetic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ADHD:<\/strong> difficulty concentrating and staying calm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Autism spectrum disorder (ASS):<\/strong> difficulty making contact or strong reaction to stimuli.<\/li>\n<li><strong>NLD (non-verbal learning disorder):<\/strong> difficulty planning, keeping overview and communicating without words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Giftedness with learning problems:<\/strong> sometimes children have difficulty learning because of too little challenge or boredom, or because they learn and work differently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you do not see a learning disorder in the list above that you recognize in your child, ask the school or youth doctor for more information.<\/p>\n<p>More information about these learning disorders can be found at specialized organizations, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nkd.nl\/\">NKD<\/a> (Dutch quality institute dyslexia), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/aclk?sa=L&#038;ai=DChsSEwi8iaqZ8tqQAxWAnYMHHSjZGhgYACICCAEQABoCZWY&#038;co=1&#038;ase=2&#038;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvImqmfLakAMVgJ2DBx0o2RoYEAAYASAAEgLDYvD_BwE&#038;cce=2&#038;category=acrcp_v1_32&#038;sig=AOD64_3-eCeCnBhWXXq8KnOsT3m6OdLWBw&#038;q&#038;nis=4&#038;adurl&#038;ved=2ahUKEwjH8aSZ8tqQAxWJ1wIHHcgHMloQ0Qx6BAgVEAE\">Balans<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/wijzijnmind.nl\/\">MIND<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Where can you go for help or research?<\/h3>\n<p>Always discuss the learning problems or learning disorder first with the school.
