But what is special education exactly? For whom is it? The classes are smaller and there is more guidance. Teachers often have extra knowledge about behavior, learning, or medical support. The goal is for all children to develop at a pace and in an environment that suits them.<\/p>\n<h3>For whom is special education?<\/h3>\n<p>Special education is for children who need more support than a regular primary school or <a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/en\/special-primary-education\/\">special primary education<\/a> school can provide for their support needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These are for example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>children with an intellectual disability;<\/li>\n<li>children with a visual or auditory impairment;<\/li>\n<li>children with a physical disability or long-term illness;<\/li>\n<li>children with a developmental disorder, such as autism;<\/li>\n<li>children with serious behavioral problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is the difference between special primary education and special education?<\/h3>\n<p>Special primary education and special education are both separate schools, not special classes within a regular primary school. The difference lies in how much extra support a child needs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Special primary education is for children who need more support than a regular primary school can provide.<\/li>\n<li>Special education is for children who need more intensive support and\/or specialist care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A transfer to special education only happens if parents, school, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/en\/knowledge-base\/25827-2\/partnership-tailored-education-and-the-parent-and-youth-support-point\/\">partnership tailored education<\/a> agree that the environment better fits what the child needs.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"knop","knop":{"title":"Here you see the difference in one overview","url":"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Tabel.pdf","target":"_blank"},"kleur":"primary"},{"acf_fc_layout":"extra_inhoud_blok","inhoud":"<h3>What kinds of special education are there?<\/h3>\n<p>In special education we divide schools into four groups. These groups are called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/en\/clusters-in-special-education\/\">clusters<\/a>&#8216;. Each cluster is for a special group of children.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cluster 1:<\/strong> for blind or visually impaired children (blind or visually impaired).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cluster 2:<\/strong> for children with hearing impairment, language development disorder, or speech problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cluster 3:<\/strong> for children with a physical or intellectual disability or with a long-term illness.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cluster 4:<\/strong> for children with behavioral or psychological problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How is your child admitted?<\/h3>\n<p>Your child cannot just go to special education. Together with the school, you first look at what support your child needs. The agreements about this are set by the school in the <a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/en\/development-perspective-plan-at-school\/\">development perspective plan<\/a>. As a parent, you are always involved in this process.<\/p>\n<p>How admission to special education exactly works differs per cluster. Read more about this on the page about the <a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/en\/clusters-in-special-education\/\">different clusters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>What does special education look like?<\/h3>\n<p>Children in special education often have their own learning path: a kind of personal program. This means they work on goals that fit their development. Some students then go to regular education. Others may later go to <a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/en\/secondary-special-education\/\">secondary special education<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/oudersenonderwijs.nl\/en\/practical-education-track\/\">practical education track<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The school makes a plan together with parents (and the child). This plan describes how the child develops and what support belongs to it.
