This curriculum revision must ensure that the nationally set education goals prepare students better for their personal, social, and working life.","inhoud":"<p>The reason for the curriculum revision is a widely felt need to update the curriculum in an integral and coherent way. The curriculum is thirteen years old and parts have been renewed, but ad hoc and fragmented, following incidents and external or top-down influences. Politics indicated the importance of two new learning areas: Digital literacy and Citizenship. For the current revision, teachers and school leaders are in charge for the first time.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thousands of people joined in<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Between March 2018 and October 2019, 125 teachers and 18 school leaders from primary education, special education, and all sectors in secondary education formed development teams and set the needed knowledge and skills for nine learning areas. In five consultation rounds, they collected feedback from fellow teachers and school leaders, scientists, teacher trainers, further education, and professional associations. They also collected feedback from students, parents, social organizations, and businesses. On average, about 6000 people participated per round. Such broad involvement in developing the basis for core objectives and final terms had never happened before.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Core and choice<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The teachers and school leaders made clear choices about what is important for all students. They worked this out so that the transition from primary to secondary education runs more smoothly and they connected subjects and learning areas. They only describe the core, so teaching teams have more room to choose their own content. The results of the development teams are not concrete lesson materials for the classroom but form the basis for the revision of the core objectives. \u201cBy describing the core briefly in the core objectives, there will be room for teachers to choose. This room for choice is essential for teachers\u2019 ownership,\u201d said Theo Douma, chairman of the Coordination Group.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Time and space needed<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Douma: \u201cTo make sure this curriculum revision really reaches the classroom, it is very important that teachers and school leaders get time and space to work on this. They must also be able to train themselves if needed. Education currently faces complex issues that have a big impact on schools. Work pressure is high and the shortage of teachers in primary education and certain subjects in secondary education is a concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Advice for the next steps<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After political decision-making, the focus must be on broader information supply and involvement of schools. The Coordination Group finds it essential that the education field stays actively involved in the curriculum revision. It has to be implemented in the education field after all. Teachers, school leaders, and students know best what their students need.
