This is shown by research among 538 parents from the Landelijk Ouderpanel.","inhoud":"<h3>Digital teaching method widely used<\/h3>\n<p>Almost two thirds of all children will get at least part of their lessons this school year via laptop, tablet or computer. Especially in secondary school, there is a considerable group who follow all subjects digitally: 11%. Luckily, almost all parents find this important. On the other hand, 16% do not have any subject offered on computer, laptop or tablet. The possibilities of digital education are not always used fully. In 37%, the lessons and exercises adjust to the child. This happens more often in primary school than in secondary school. Still, 30% of students see exactly the same on their screen. While almost all parents find it important that digital education adapts personally to the child.<\/p>\n<h3>Especially educational apps popular<\/h3>\n<p>There are many apps that help children learn, like Snappet, Duolingo or Kahoot. In primary school, 37% of children use such apps in class. In secondary school, this is even 45%. Apps that help with planning, agenda or note-taking are also regularly used in class. In secondary school, a quarter of students use them. Moreover, one in five teachers in secondary school use apps to communicate with students.<\/p>\n<h3>Parents see opportunities<\/h3>\n<p>Half of the parents are satisfied with the use of digital teaching methods and apps. Still, more than 20% think they can be used more often. The opinions of parents vary a lot. Some think it is important that children learn to handle tablets early because it is important for the future. Other parents think too much screen time is unhealthy and harms motor skills.<\/p>\n<h3>Schools: inform parents about policy<\/h3>\n<p>Most parents want to be involved in the policy about digital learning tools. They mainly want to receive information from the school (56%), but many parents also want to have a say (21%) or even make decisions (13%) about the policy. In practice, schools do not respond to these wishes. 43% of parents say they are not involved at all and 37% say they do get information from the school. Many parents want more involvement.<\/p>\n<h3>Digital skills and media literacy<\/h3>\n<p>In a digital world, it is more important that children learn to handle it well. This includes digital skills like using a computer or learning to type. But also media literacy: what a child needs to handle information well. Parents are divided about how much attention the school pays to these subjects. About one third think the school gives enough attention. Almost as many think there should be more attention at school. A large group says they have no view on this.<\/p>\n<h3>School has a role in media literacy<\/h3>\n<p>Most parents see a role for the school in media literacy. Nearly half see a small role for the school, with most responsibility for parents. 45% think school and parents share this responsibility equally. Parents of children in secondary school see shared responsibility more often. In primary school, parents see themselves as mainly responsible, with a small role for the school.<\/p>\n<h3>Privacy and security<\/h3>\n<p>Privacy is an important topic for parents. Almost all parents find it important that the school handles their child&#8217;s privacy carefully. Three quarters find this very important. In many ways, it already goes well: schools almost always ask parents&#8217; permission before posting photos or videos online and usually also when data is shared with others. Most schools inform parents about the online privacy policy. Yet parents often do not know many things. They usually do not know if the internet connection is well protected or if their child&#8217;s data is anonymous for a provider of digital learning tools.<\/p>\n<h3>School facilities<\/h3>\n<p>Good ICT facilities are the basis for learning in a digital environment. That is why we asked parents about the speed and stability of the internet and availability of computers, laptops, tablets and smartboards. Almost all classrooms have a smartboard and more than half of the schools have enough computers, laptops or tablets. Yet a quarter of parents say availability leaves something to be desired. Parents have little view of the speed and stability of the internet. Those who do are mostly satisfied.<\/p>\n<h3>Landelijk Ouderpanel: join the conversation!<\/h3>\n<p>Letting parents&#8217; voices be heard is the goal of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landelijkouderpanel.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Landelijk Ouderpanel<\/a>. Over 4300 mothers and fathers join large studies and short surveys about education and raising children. We discuss results with, for example, the Education Inspectorate, the Ministry of Education or school associations.
