Extra attention for school participation council<\/h3>\n

Minister Slob of education opened the congress. He stressed that he finds the role of the school participation council very important. More transparency and good information about policy and finances are urgently needed. To support school participation councils he promised to continue the Project Strengthening school participation council<\/a> for at least another year. Good news for school participation councils that need some extra support.<\/p>\n

Workshops Ouders & Onderwijs<\/h3>\n

Ouders & Onderwijs had a stand at the congress. Many parents, teachers, and school directors came to us with their questions or to get to know us. The information, bags, pens, and a booklet full of tips went quickly. Our advisors also gave three workshops: about involved parents, promoting elections, and the parent consultation. These were busy and involved a lot of exchange.<\/p>\n

Involve parents in the school participation council<\/h3>\n

Parents are involved with their child and thus also with the school. They are also willing to contribute. But how can you involve parents and include them in the school participation council? Our advice is: use parents for their expertise and consider their knowledge and possibilities. Does a parent work in construction? Then ask them to help think about insulating the school building. Does that not work during school hours? Invite the parent separately for (part of) the meeting or form a focus group on a certain topic. Also be visible to parents and make clear what is happening and where parents can help.<\/p>\n

Elections for parents<\/h3>\n

It is often hard to find parents for the school participation council. How do you make parents enthusiastic? And why should they want to join the school participation council? There was a rich exchange among participants about this. The first step is to be visible. Most parents do not know about the school participation council or what is discussed there. Be transparent and clear about what you do and why it is important. Serve coffee on the first school day and tell parents about your work and achieved successes. Especially when you keep talking the barrier for parents is lower. Communicate with parents in different ways: talk with each other at parent evenings, ask parents\u2019 opinions through digital surveys, and invite them to meetings or focus groups. Only a column in the newsletter is often not enough. When there is already warm contact, the step to the school participation council is much smaller.<\/p>\n

No standard formula<\/h3>\n

During the workshops parents mainly shared tips about what works and what does not. Some school participation councils succeed well in involving parents or recruiting them, but often the contact with parents is difficult. A parent also said that the culture of the school is important in the approach. What principles and vision do parents and the school have about cooperation? Was this discussed at the start at school? There is no standard formula for this. So you have no choice but to experiment. Because what works at one school may not work at another school at all.<\/p>\n

Parent consultation<\/h3>\n

In some situations the parent consultation is mandatory<\/a>. Yet a parent consultation is a good way to stay in contact with parents. The big interest in the workshop showed that parents in the school participation council are excited about the idea. The topic lives. Parents are looking for ways to use the parent consultation. It gives a chance to ask well about certain topics and also to show what the school participation council is busy with. At the same time, it is not useful to send out a digital survey for every agenda point. When yes and when no? That caused a lively discussion. Here too it appears: look at the parents\u2019 needs. What signals come in and what do you hear in everyday talks? Connect to that. In the workshop we gave a few tips:<\/p>\n
