The letter expresses the organizations’ appreciation for the efforts of everyone involved in education during this time of crisis. Many initiatives have been started to support students and parents. Under great pressure, several significant decisions were made, which the parent organizations mostly view positively. The commitment of officials and the people shaping education in these strange times is great. Yet the parent organizations also receive worrying signals from parents. The letter brings all those points to attention.<\/p>\n
After the decision to close schools, education quickly started shaping distance learning. This happened without any prior preparation. A remarkable achievement. Still, there are points to improve. Distance learning requires good and close contact between school, parent, and student. Strengthening the direct triangle of parent \u2013 school \u2013 child is therefore important. There is much attention for children and also for those who fall outside the school’s view. But do not forget the parents. Stand beside the parents and support them. Take them seriously, help them in parenting, and provide more leave options for parents who combine distance learning with work and\/or care tasks. Involve parents in making plans for reopening schools and provide clarity about whether their child will move up to the next school year. The parent organizations believe that children should get the benefit of the doubt as much as possible, and schools should create programs to catch up on missed progress and keep students hopeful. Primary schools should get the chance to raise the grade 8 school advice. Extra attention at the start of the next school year is also very important. The starting level next school year will be lower than expected for most students. Especially students moving from grade 8 to the first year of secondary school deserve extra attention. Secondary education will need to account for greater differences in student levels. And start especially by making plans for extra support these students will receive. Finally, the parent organizations call to not only focus on educational content but also give attention to the social-emotional effects on students from missing school.<\/p>\n
The letter further describes that the past period has shown that distance learning, despite clear limits, offers many possibilities for a large group of children. This offers hope for the thousands of homebound students who never used distance learning before because schools did not cooperate.
\nThe current situation offers a chance that must not be missed to involve these children again in education and to make an action plan to maintain distance learning later for children who benefit from it. Distance learning can thus become one of the usual sustainable options. The education organizations ask the minister to take the lead on this soon.<\/p>\n
We can only tackle the effects of school closures together. This means good communication between child, parent, and school is even more important than usual. Education faces a huge challenge and much more is expected from parents too. Cooperation, understanding each other’s (im)possibilities, and taking each other seriously is crucial. This also means accepting that not everything we want can happen now. This applies to children, teachers, and certainly also to parents. Ouders & Onderwijs and the undersigned gladly think and work with minister Slob to face this challenge together.<\/p>\n
