Most lessons are learned, reports discussed and handed out. What remains is cleaning up, celebrating the end of the school year and wishing each other a great holiday. Right? Not for the parents we hear from at Ouders & Onderwijs these weeks on the phone\u2026","inhoud":"

Every year near the end of the school year, the phone is ringing nonstop. Day after day the summer holiday gets closer and the despair of the parents who call us grows. They do not have clarity yet on where their child can go after the summer holiday. Because they cannot find a school willing to give their child a chance or simply because there is no space anywhere. So hundreds of children and their parents start the holiday without knowing how to continue afterwards.<\/p>\n

Why does this happen? A short list of situations I personally heard about in the last weeks.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. School has declared itself unable to act and wants the child to go to special education, but there is no school with space at all.<\/li>\n
  2. School thinks a child belongs in Special primary education, but the Special primary education school thinks the child can stay in regular education.<\/li>\n
  3. Because of corona, a child must be forced to move down, but there is no school nearby that wants to take him.<\/li>\n
  4. School has not yet found a teacher for 5 of the 8 grades and does not know if they can even open next year. A striking detail: To prevent all parents from leaving, the school governing bodies made a deal: Children from this school are rejected everywhere.<\/li>\n
  5. The Partnership Tailored Education has issued a Declaration of Admissibility for special education, but parents want their child to have a chance at another regular school. Since there is a Declaration of Admissibility, no regular school bothers to check if they can provide Tailored Education and reject in writing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    And then you stand there as a parent. It is truly heartbreaking to hear these parents say they no longer know what to say to their child. These children start the holiday without perspective, without knowing where they will go after the holiday. Without knowing if they will go anywhere after the holiday. We really cannot do this to children and their parents.<\/p>\n
