Levels within mbo<\/h3>\n

There are four mbo levels. Mbo courses at level 1 are entry courses. Courses at mbo level 2 are called basic vocational courses. Mbo 3 courses are called vocational courses. Finally, there are mbo studies at level 4. These are middle management or specialist courses. The higher the level of an mbo course, the longer it takes.<\/p>\n

Admission requirements for mbo<\/h3>\n

The admission requirements for an mbo course depend on the level. For an entry course (level 1) there are no admission requirements. However, the student must be at least 16 years old. For an mbo course at level 2 a diploma of at least vmbo basic vocational pathway is needed. Does your child want to take a course at mbo level 3 or 4? Then he or she must have at least completed the vmbo kader vocational pathway.<\/p>\n

Bol or bbl<\/h3>\n

Many mbo courses offer 2 pathways: the vocational education pathway (bol) and the vocational training pathway (bbl). Students who choose bol go to school (almost) every day. In the bbl variant, students go to school one or two days per week. The rest of the week they work at a training company.<\/p>\n

How is the labor market?<\/h3>\n

When choosing an mbo course, also pay attention to how the labor market is. This determines how quickly your child finds a suitable job after the course. On the websites of mbo schools you can find information about this. But be aware: some mbo schools are too positive about job prospects. Also think about how likely it is that computers and robots will take over jobs in the future. Like delivery drones replacing delivery people. Also, fewer sales assistants are needed because of self-checkouts.<\/p>\n

Quality of the course and the school<\/h3>\n

Mbo schools and mbo courses must meet many requirements. Yet there are quality differences. Therefore, do not only look at the subjects and options of an mbo course. For example, what about the contacts the school has with companies?<\/p>\n

Online lessons or physical lessons<\/h3>\n

Many mbo schools plan to keep giving part of the lessons online, even after the coronavirus pandemic. So check when choosing an mbo course if this is the case. And how much of the lessons will remain online. Because (many) online lessons are not suitable for every child.<\/p>\n

Recognized mbo courses<\/h3>\n

Does your child have an mbo course in mind? Always check if it is recognized. You can do this in the Crebo register. There you also find the official name of the course. This makes it easier to compare mbo courses with the same course at other mbo schools. And when your child looks for a job, the course is better recognized by employers.<\/p>\n

After mbo: work or continue?<\/h3>\n

Does your child think about continuing to hbo after an mbo course? Then pay attention that the mbo course is not a ‘final stop’. Mbo studies that train for jobs like baker, hairdresser or metal worker have no follow-up course at a university of applied sciences. But there are also mbo courses that fit very well with hbo bachelors. Such mbo courses are in areas like social work, IT, dance and nursing. If your child wants to continue studying after mbo, it is good to pay attention to this. But be honest. Is that really what your child wants? And can he or she handle the higher level and pace of an hbo course?<\/p>\n

Information days at mbo schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Go with your child to information markets, job fairs, open days and tours at mbo schools. You and your child will get a clearer picture of the course and the future job. But you also get a sense of the atmosphere at the school and how everything around the course is organized. Many mbo schools also organize information evenings for parents.<\/p>\n

Support during the course<\/h3>\n

Does your child have a disability? For example a long-term illness or a concentration disorder? At some mbo schools the support is better arranged than at others. So ask about that. Or if during the course it appears your child is struggling. How is the support then? And does the school involve the parents in the progress?<\/p>\n

Registering for an mbo course<\/h3>\n

Your child can register directly at the mbo school. Registration for an mbo course must usually be before April 1. But it can be later. Is your child registering for a private mbo course? That usually does not have to be before April 1.<\/p>\n

Switching mbo courses<\/h3>\n

After April 1 it is still possible to switch to another mbo course. And often also if the academic year has already started. Some mbo courses start with a foundation year. Only after that year do students have to choose a certain direction. Does your child want to do another mbo course or switch to another mbo school? Often this can be done in the first 3 months. It is also possible for many mbo courses to start in February. Your child then does not have to wait until the next academic year. If your child chooses another mbo level, sometimes extra tests like a math test are needed.<\/p>\n
