We spoke with her about the changes in parent involvement and why this topic is often so difficult for schools.","inhoud":"<h3><strong>Why is parent involvement important?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Parent involvement gives a fuller picture of a child, Arline explains. By combining school and home stories, you create a much wider and deeper insight. Teachers sometimes see one side of a child that may not appear at home. Advice from the heart: \u201c1 + 1 = 3 if you use parent involvement well.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why does parent involvement have a negative image?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>What I have noticed in recent years is that more parents find it hard to talk to school. They do not want to ask too much. Parents delay the conversation until a situation gets out of hand, they then go to school and it escalates. Then the school often sees you as a difficult parent.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What prejudices are there about parents who appear less at school?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Often people think that less present parents are not involved, but this is not always true. Schools must offer tailored education and understand why parents are sometimes absent. Is it a language problem? Or can the parent not pay the parent contribution? I know a Rotterdam school that struggled with this. The principal decided to stand by the door every day, serve coffee and tea, and talk with each other.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where do schools hold responsibility for parent involvement?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The role of schools starts with teacher training, Arline thinks. Many students in teacher training like working with children. That is good, but the parents are also involved. Building trust and relationships with parents and school must be part of teacher training.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How can schools involve fathers more?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Schools should organize father-friendly activities, such as football tournaments or other jobs around school. The school should also adapt more to what society asks. By not planning meetings just after school but later in the day, we do not only put the teacher\u2019s needs first but also those of the parent.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why is parent involvement important for school performance?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If a student is struggling at school, it is good if you have already invested in the relationship. If parents know beforehand that they are always welcome and can always ask questions, they will find you.<\/p>\n<p>If things happen at home that affect behavior at school, it is just as important that the teacher knows about it. This way the teacher can better understand it.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How have you seen parent involvement change in 10 years?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We dealt with corona and it had a big impact. Parents had to take over many school tasks, like teaching at home. You saw that some parents were impressed by the work of the teacher because they had to do it themselves. But you also saw that parents noticed some teachers\u2019 work was below standard.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, some schools realized it was nice that parents could not come to school and the school could do its work without being watched over the shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Since corona, it has not fully recovered to the level it was before. You can also hear that on the phone.
