Parents can also find their child's study choice difficult. Should you as a parent get involved? And if yes, how do you do this? Sandra Fekkes, study advisor at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, sees how important it is that parents do help with their child's hbo study choice. For Ouders & Onderwijs she answers questions and gives tips on how parents can help their child and what does not help.

When should my child start making a study choice for hbo?

“We advise students to start exploring study choices in 4 havo already. This is very broad and can go in all directions if you do not know yet. You will discover what you find interesting. If you start exploring in 5 havo, you are in the exam period and have to visit open days at the same time. Often the preference is then to finish exams and not to visit open days. For parents, teachers, and decanen it is important to keep in mind that it is a process and it takes time.”

“If you are an mbo student wanting to switch to hbo, start exploring in the second last year of your study. It is not always the case that mbo students want to study the same direction as the profession they have a diploma for. Sometimes they want something totally different or want to specialize. The last year of mbo often includes a final internship. This means students have less space than a havo-5 student in their exam year to make a good study choice.”

How important is it for parents to help with their child’s study choice?

“There are many hbo studies, and the same studies can differ per school. One school focuses more on a part of the subject or approaches it differently. It is nice if someone supports your child and thinks along in the background. Who better than parents who know their child well? Parents sometimes know people already working in the field of their child’s future study. A parent can suggest talking to them. Parents can also be an extra reminder. So it can be nice for a student to have someone beside them to remind them of a question they wanted to ask.

Also, children are very young when they have to choose an hbo study. It starts with choosing a profile at age fifteen. Then you are already in a box early and cannot choose differently for other interests. Research shows the brain fully develops only from age 25. Only then can you make well-informed choices, and by then you have already graduated. This is something to keep in mind as a parent.
The study choice process asks parents to keep a proper distance so the child can follow their own pace. This can be hard, I notice.”

How does choosing a (hbo) study work?

“There are four phases in making a study choice

The orientation phase: this is the start when students look around, for example via study choice tests. They discover what they find interesting. Do you go towards care, construction, or something else? We developed an online game for this, Future You.

The exploratory phase: in this phase students visit open days. For example, they find a few studies interesting in their area of interest. They also talk to people, like a professional in the field they like.

The deepening phase: in phase three they have two or three studies left to focus on. For example, by spending a day with the program they saw at an open day. If one study is left, we advise comparing that study at different universities of applied sciences. The focus in such a study can differ per school.

The deciding phase: now they apply and make sure all information is complete. Maybe there is an interview with the study to check the choice. The study advisor’s role ends here, but not the parents’ role. They can still help by giving information to the university and remind their child of deadlines.

At The Hague University of Applied Sciences we hold online parent information sessions twice a year before big open days. We explain the phases of study choice and ask parents which choice style they think their child has. We also give parents a brochure.”

In which phase is my role as a parent most important?

“The start is most important, the orientation phase. This is often the hardest and students sometimes delay it. Parents can make their child aware that choosing a study takes time and it is important to start on time and take their time. Also in the exploratory phase when students visit universities of applied sciences open days, parents can help. It is good if future students have some questions ready beforehand. Parents can help remind their child of this.

Parents are more than welcome at open days, but we mainly address the students. We have a different conversation with parents. For example, we have an inspiration path that the student and parent walk together, each with their own questions. This is a route along phases in the student’s life where we ask questions like: what did they like to do as a child? What are they good at? What attracts them now in a future job? At the end we talk together. It is nice to see what happens between parent and child. Sometimes they cross paths or give the same answers. At that moment you see parents are really involved in the process.

In the deepening and deciding phases students can mostly manage well. Give them a reminder to register at most. But if they have done a trial day at a study, you can sometimes play devil’s advocate: ‘What did you think? What did you like? How much math is in the study? Is that one of your strong subjects?’ Those deepening questions can put your child on another track by thinking further.”

What do future students think if their parents are involved in the study choice?

“We did research among first-year students and asked who played the most important role in their study choice. About 50 percent said it was their parents. At open days I often see parents walking with a child who lags behind. The parents ask questions and the child might look uninterested, but afterwards they are glad that their parents encouraged them. And there was someone who made sure they did not make a random study choice at the last moment.”

What if you as a parent foresee a choice that might not be well considered?

“To parents who panic about their child who still has no study choice, or to students who keep doubting, we say: look around. Who do you know who works the job they originally trained for? There are quite some who do not. They might do something less fitting than ideal, but then they have a diploma and a certain work and thinking level needed at work. Also retraining or further education later is still possible.”

What should you as a parent better not do?

“A big pitfall for parents can be that they are too involved and want to pull all answers out of their child, while sometimes you must let your child go. Maybe your child has a good conversation with their decaan or a study advisor and you must give space for that. If you show you are there to come along to an open day and that your child can ask you questions, that can be enough.”

nieuwsbrief","call_to_action_2":"geen

Sandra: "In-depth questions can still put your child on a different track"

<meta name="description" content="Study choice advisor Sandra sees how important it is that parents help with study choices.
