Yet they often remain in the background in education. Parent evenings, parent panels and contact moments with school are still often aimed at mothers, while fathers are also important.","inhoud":"<p>For this article we spoke with (now retired) professor of pedagogy Louis Tavecchio. For more than forty years he has researched fatherhood, upbringing and parent involvement. According to him, the role of fathers is still too often underestimated. He says: &#8220;when it comes to upbringing, many people automatically think of mothers. While an involved father has great added value for children and schools.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>The father as an important role model<\/h3>\n<p>According to Tavecchio, fathers are much more than a second educator alongside the mother. &#8220;Fathers are an important role model for their children,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>When a father shows interest in school, asks questions about homework or is present at parent meetings, research shows this positively affects children&#8217;s motivation. Children see that school is important and feel supported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Involvement is often expected from mothers,&#8221; says Tavecchio. &#8220;If a father shows the same involvement, this often has an extra positive effect on children&#8217;s motivation and self-confidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A father who hardly pays attention to school matters can unintentionally send the opposite signal. &#8220;An uninterested father is not good for children&#8217;s self-confidence. This can eventually also affect their school performance.&#8221;<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"quote","quote_tekst":"Schools should ask much more often what the father thinks"},{"acf_fc_layout":"extra_inhoud_blok","inhoud":"<p><strong>Why are fathers less reached?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite the importance of father involvement, schools still often mainly communicate with mothers. According to Tavecchio, this partly has to do with old patterns that still exist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The mother is often seen as the main contact person,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;If the school has spoken to the mother, it is quickly assumed that the father is also informed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This usually happens unconsciously. Many schools simply choose the parent who is easiest to reach. Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nji.nl\/databanken\/cijfers\/cijfers-over-werkende-ouders\">mothers on average work part-time more often<\/a>, they are more often available during office hours for calls, conversations and activities.<\/p>\n<p>This creates a pattern where mothers receive more information and fathers less. &#8220;The mother is often used as a source of information about the entire family,&#8221; says Tavecchio. &#8220;While schools should ask much more often what the father thinks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fathers do not always feel addressed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Tavecchio, recognition also plays an important role. Much communication from schools still seems implicitly aimed at mothers.<\/p>\n<p>He gives the example of his own son, who saw a call at school for \u2018reading mothers&#8217;. When he asked why fathers were not mentioned, it took weeks before the text was changed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems like something small, but these kinds of things do matter,&#8221; says Tavecchio. &#8220;If you see mothers everywhere in folders, photos and communication, fathers feel less addressed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This also applies to activities and meetings. Many contact moments take place at times when working fathers can hardly be present. This can eventually lead to fathers feeling that their presence adds little.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"quote","quote_tekst":"Different perspectives complement each other"},{"acf_fc_layout":"extra_inhoud_blok","inhoud":"<h3>What do schools miss when fathers are absent?<\/h3>\n<p>According to Tavecchio, it is not just about equal representation. When fathers are missing, schools miss an important perspective on children&#8217;s development.<\/p>\n<p>He points out that fathers on average often emphasize different things than mothers. While mothers are often focused on protection and safety, fathers on average encourage their children more to take on challenges and gain new experiences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That does not mean that all fathers are the same or that all mothers are protective,&#8221; he emphasizes. &#8220;But these different perspectives complement each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For schools, policymakers and parent organizations it is therefore valuable to hear both voices when it comes to education and upbringing.<\/p>\n<h3>How can schools involve fathers better?<\/h3>\n<p>According to Tavecchio, change begins with awareness. Schools must ask themselves if they really address both parents.<\/p>\n<p>This can be done by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>always speaking about parents instead of just mothers;<\/li>\n<li>inviting both parents to meetings;<\/li>\n<li>organizing contact moments outside of work hours;<\/li>\n<li>making fathers visible in communication and images;<\/li>\n<li>giving involved fathers a platform as role models for other parents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, organizations that represent parents can also critically look at who they reach and who may be missing.<\/p>\n<h3>A shared responsibility<\/h3>\n<p>According to Tavecchio, more father involvement is not a task for fathers alone. Schools, organizations and mothers can also play a role in actively involving fathers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have to create contact moments where the chance that fathers are present is greater,&#8221; he says. &#8220;And you have to show that their presence matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because ultimately, children benefit most from this.
