10-14 education.
In recent years, the interest in 10-14 education has increased. But what is 10-14 education exactly? And why do parents choose it?
What is 10-14 education?
A school with 10-14 education gives pupils aged 10 to 14 the chance to delay selecting and choosing a secondary school. They do not move on to secondary school after group 8 or when they are 12, but usually stay at the same school until they are 14.
This gives pupils more time to discover what they want, can do, and what suits them. The schools always form a partnership tailored education between a primary school and a secondary school.
How does 10-14 education work?
10-14 education can be organized in different ways. The main features are:
- Pupils aged 10 to 14 follow a program with a continuous learning path from primary to secondary school.
- A primary school and a secondary school work together on the program.
- Pupils often do not have lessons in separate subjects but in projects combining several subjects. This is called cross-curricular education.
- Schools pay a lot of attention to tailored learning and the personal development of pupils.
- Pupils get more time to find out what they want and can do and what suits them before choosing a secondary school.
Setting up 10-14 schools
The first initiatives for 10-14 education started in 2012. It is expected that many more schools will be added in the coming years. The reason for starting them is often the distance between home and the secondary school.
Also, some initiatives focus on specific learning needs of children, such as curious doers, independent thinkers, or active teenagers.
