Communication with the school.

It is good if you know what the school expects from you and what your child will face. The school communicates about this in different ways. How does the school communicate with you as a parent? And which information does the school give through which channel?

Website

On the school’s website you find information about the school itself. This can be about different topics like an impression of the atmosphere, educational topics (mission, vision, norms and values), subject packages and practical information, such as:

Newsletter

Many schools send a newsletter to parents. Through the newsletter you stay informed about recent developments and events at school, such as changes in the school building, events or activities, and what will happen in the class during this period.

Ask the school if and where you can sign up for the newsletter. Often schools send this automatically.

Parent app

A popular way to communicate with you as a parent is a parent app. Commonly used apps are for example Parro, Social Schools, Quebble or Magister.

With a parent app the school keeps you informed about your child’s education. For example, by sending photos, sharing your child’s grades, scheduling appointments, and keeping you informed about absent teachers or lesson cancellations. So make sure you have downloaded the parent app to stay informed about your child’s education.

Student monitoring system

As a parent, you want to check your child’s school results now and then. In a student monitoring system you can see your child’s grades and progress.

Common systems include Parnassys, Cito, Magister and SomToday. What is in the student monitoring system is also used for your child’s student file.

School guide

The school guide is an important form of communication for the school. It contains rules, agreements, holidays and information about tailored education. Every school must have a school guide.

If you look for specific information, you can ask the school where to find the school guide. Often you find this on the school’s website.

Conversations at school

An important way of communication is the talks you have with the teacher. During a introductory meeting, parent evening, 10-minute conversation or triangle meeting, you as a parent and your child’s teacher discuss your child’s development, school results, and you have time to ask questions.

A prize for parent friendliness

In 2024, Ouders & Onderwijs turned 10 years old. To celebrate, we looked for the most parent-friendly schools in the Netherlands. This search led to two winners: a primary school and a secondary school. We gave these schools an award. This is a fine example of how schools and parents can work together.
