Lice.

Head lice occur often at school and spread quickly. Check your child regularly and treat lice as soon as possible. Your child cannot be refused just because head lice are found.

What are head lice?

Head lice are parasites: these bugs live on human blood. They like hairy and warm places such as behind the ears, the neck, or under bangs. A head louse is about 3 millimeters long and is gray-blue or red-brown after it has sucked blood.

Head lice at school

Head lice spread fast at school, especially among children. This is normal because lice move from head to head through hair. At school, children have close contact with each other. It is important to check your child’s hair often, especially after school holidays. Act quickly if you find head lice and inform the school or your child’s teacher.

Treatment against lice

Daily combing with a fine-toothed comb for two weeks is the best way to fight lice. You can also use a lice treatment product. Parents should check family members and tell the school, clubs, and friends if a child has head lice. You can read more about lice treatment on the website of the RIVM.

Reason for refusal?

Head lice are a common problem at many schools. Parents are responsible for sending their children to school without lice. Children with lice can only be refused in very serious cases. Schools provide support and many have parents who help check for lice.
