Showering after gym class.

Some schools require their students to shower after gym class. This depends on the school's policy. Students can feel ashamed, so the school cannot require them to shower naked.

School policy

A school can include in its policy that a student must shower after gym class. Schools often do this for hygiene reasons. Some schools have a private space for students who feel uncomfortable showering in a group. This can also be part of the school’s policy.

Naked showering

A school can require students to shower, but cannot require them to shower naked. The national complaints committee education ruled in a parent’s complaint that children’s feelings of shame must be taken seriously. To meet this, a student can shower with underwear on.

Dirty changing rooms and supervision

The school is responsible for a safe and clean environment. Sometimes a shower or changing room is very dirty, or parents have concerns about how students are supervised. In that case, parents can contact the school participation council and the school principal. Then they can check if the policy is followed or if it needs to be changed.

Role of the school participation council

Parents in the school participation council join discussions about the policy on showering after gym class and about hygiene and safety in the gym and changing rooms. The school participation council has the right to agree on safety, health, and welfare policy.
