What is a combination class
A combination class has students from different groups. A school can choose these classes because of lack of space, lack of teachers, or lack of students. There can also be a teaching reason: children learn to be independent and work together, and there are usually several base groups in a class. Students from these groups then get lessons in smaller groups for some subjects.
Advantages and disadvantages
In a combination class, older and younger children can help each other. This helps social development. Also, children who are behind or ahead can join the other class more easily. On the other hand, some students find it hard to wait for the teacher’s time and attention. There can be some confusion for students, causing chaos in the class. A good teacher can prevent this.
Parents talk along
The school plan shows how the school arranges the groups. The school participation council has agreement on the school plan. A change from a year group to a combination class and back must first go through the school participation council.
