Mobile phone use has a big impact on children’s body and mind.
Children spend more and more time on their mobile phones and this has clear effects. They notice disadvantages from long screen use, both physically and mentally. This appears from a warning letter from doctors and scientists to the government.
Sleep and sight under pressure
Many children also sit on their phones in the evening. For example, they are on social media, chatting, and watching videos. This causes them to sleep less well and be more tired, irritable, or have trouble concentrating on their homework or school during the day. Doctors also warn of more nearsightedness among young people due to constant screen watching.
Mental pressure and digital balance
Besides physical complaints, mental pressure is also growing. For many children between 11 and 14 years old, some apps and social media often cause pressure and insecurity. Online bullying, fear of failure, and the feeling of having to be reachable constantly play a role.
Still, this digital world also has positive sides. Children can find support from others, have contact with other children they would not meet otherwise, and find like-minded people, for example in LHBTIQA+ groups.
Clear boundaries help
The over 3000 doctors who signed the letter mainly want clear rules about mobile phone use. Think of screen-free moments, for example during dinner or just before bedtime. Age limits on smartphone ownership are also mentioned.
Mobile phone ban in secondary school
Since 2024, a mobile phone ban has been introduced in secondary schools. Ouders & Onderwijs researched this. The 2025 study showed that both parents and children are becoming more satisfied with the ban.
As many as 88% of parents support a ban on mobile phones in class, and 64% even support a ban on the whole school. Support among children also grew from 45% in 2024 to 53% in 2025 for a ban in class.
