Parent friendliness is really seeing my child.

26 September 2024 News

Ouders & Onderwijs is looking for the most parent friendly primary school, secondary school, and mbo course in the Netherlands. A parent friendly school cares about communication between teachers, your child, and of course you as a parent, according to 698 parents in the Landelijk Ouderpanel.

How involved do you feel?

The Landelijk Ouderpanel asked about the experience of parents with parent friendliness at school. They named special initiatives, such as coffee mornings, viewing sessions, or lesson days where parents sit in the school benches. More than half of the participants (56.3%) feel sufficiently involved in the school. To increase involvement, schools send a newsletter or invite parents to a parents evening or information meeting.

Parents can always drop in, contact with the principal is very accessible.

School time is a partnership

Many parents say that education should be a partnership between teachers, parents, and their child. Some schools use ‘triangle talks’ for this. Many parents find this the best thing the school does for them. You work together on the upbringing and development of your child. Accessibility helps with parent friendliness. Teachers and principals you can talk to at the school gate is a good example.

Language lessons for parents, first aid courses.

Parents mainly want to see what their child is working on

There are different activities that make a school even more parent friendly. One parent wrote about ‘lesson days’: days when children teach their parents. Another parent’s school organizes courses for parents in the subjects their child takes. Parent friendliness consists of several things: a good bond between teacher, child, and parent, and organizing activities for parents.

Is your child’s school or course also parent friendly?

Then quickly nominate your child’s school or course for this award. With this award we want to positively focus on parent involvement and parent friendliness in education. From August 26 to October 6 you can nominate your child’s school via the form below.
