Retake exam? 6 tips to help your child reach the finish line.
Tension, nerves, and long days of studying: these often come with your child taking a retake exam. As a parent, you can support your child well by helping in a pleasant way. But how do you do that in this stressful period for you as a parent too? We give you 6 handy tips.
1. Create a quiet study environment
A tidy table, as little distraction as possible, and fixed study times help a lot. Sometimes a simple change in the environment is enough to improve concentration.
2. Help create a realistic plan
Retake exams are often within a few weeks. Making a plan together gives overview and support. Let your child take the lead as much as possible, but think along and ask questions like: “Have you planned enough time to practice?”
3. Encourage breaks and relaxation
Studying for hours straight is often not effective. Help your child to take regular breaks and do something relaxing. Walking, listening to music, gaming for a bit, or reading: this prevents your child from getting overloaded.
4. Let your child explain the material to you
A good way to remember material is by explaining it out loud. Let your child tell you, your partner, or brother or sister what they just learned. You do not have to understand it yourself; it is about the process.
5. Be involved but not controlling
Show interest without constantly checking if it is going well. Occasionally ask: “How is it going?” or “Do you need help with anything?” That is nicer than reminding your child all the time that it is almost time.
6. Celebrate effort, not just the result
Whether your child passes or not, the effort already deserves appreciation. Taking a retake exam is stressful and requires a lot from your child. Show that you are proud, no matter the outcome.
