State of education: concerns about school leavers in mbo.
Yesterday the Inspectorate of Education presented the annual State of Education. The study shows that concerns about the mbo are growing. Students in the mbo do not always get the guidance and quality needed for a good future. This is one of the reasons why many stop their studies without a diploma.
Mbo students often do not get a diploma
The State of Education 2025 shows a worrying picture of the mbo. In the sample study by the Education Inspectorate, 45% of the 83 mbo programs examined received a poor or very weak rating. The biggest problem is early school leaving: students too often do not earn their diploma.
Only three mbo programs score a ‘good’
Almost half of the programs that received a poor score did so because of a bad rating on the ‘study success indicator’ from the Education Inspectorate. This indicator measures, among other things, how many students finish their program, if they are still enrolled after one year, and how many get their diploma on time. If programs do not meet these, they get a poor score. Only three of the examined programs received the highest rating, a ‘good’.

Besides mbo education quality, the State of Education 2025 also covers citizenship education, teacher shortages, and education quality in primary and secondary schools.
State of the Parent 2025: what parents think
Every year Ouders & Onderwijs researches what parents think about the education of their child. This year the study shows that parents worry about education quality, school safety, and the atmosphere in large classes. In classes with 26 or more students, parents’ trust in education drops sharply. You can read more in the State of the Parent 2025: what parents think.
