Changing mbo course.
Has your child found that the study does not fit? Or does your child want to switch to another mbo course for another reason? That can! But where do you arrange that? And what about admission rights or exemptions? We explain it to you.
Changing before the course starts
You can change courses if you keep some factors in mind. Does your child want to switch to another course before it starts? Most mbo schools accept registrations after April 1. Then your child has no right to admission. This means your child can be refused even with the right vmbo diploma. Does your child have no course yet but wants to join a course already started? This can be done up to three months after the start date.
Changing during the course
Has your child already started but it is not as expected? Sometimes your child can change courses during the school year. Your child can then start the new course in February. This differs per course and school. Ask the school for more information. Talk to the mentor. The mentor can help your child switch or refer to a career counselor. Your child should register before April 1 to have the right to admission. Then the school cannot refuse your child.
Changing mbo course: where to go?
If your child wants to change courses, your child must follow some steps:
- Talk with the mentor. The mentor can help with the change.
- Make agreements with the new course. For example about catching up on lessons, help with a disability, or exemptions for subjects already passed.
- Register at the new course and sign the new education agreement.
- Unregister from the old course.
- Don’t forget to tell DUO about the change.
Can my child register for several mbo courses?
If your child is unsure about two courses, your child can register for both. But do this before April 1. After April 1 your child must make a final choice. This gives extra time to visit an open day or ask for a trial day. Some mbo courses start with a general base year. Your child chooses a direction after that year. When your child has chosen, it is important to unregister from the course not chosen. Do this as soon as possible but before the school year starts. Unregister at the mbo school itself. Don’t forget to update DUO.
Can my child get an exemption?
Your child chose to switch mbo courses. What about exemptions? Sometimes the results from the old course count for the new course. Then your child gets an exemption for that subject. You can ask for an exemption at the exam committee. The mbo school rules and contact details of the exam committee are in the education and exam rules.
