Declaration of good conduct.

A declaration of good conduct shows that no obstacles were found for the employee to do the work. All employees of a school need a declaration of good conduct to work at school.

Declaration of good conduct

Employees at school have close contact with pupils, often one on one. The declaration of good conduct helps reduce the risk of abuses. It shows that past behavior does not block the job. This means the employee has not committed a crime that matters for the work, like a sex offense. The declaration may not be older than 6 months when starting work. Justis reviews each request and issues the declaration. If a person is suspected or convicted, this is considered. The declaration is also called proof of good behavior.

Who must have a declaration?

Almost everyone who works at the school needs a declaration when hired. This applies not only to teachers but also to teaching assistants, the counselor, interns, teacher trainees, and the school director. Staff in the lunch break care must also get a declaration, even if they are volunteers. The declaration stays valid as long as the employee works at the school. The school governing body can always ask for a new declaration.

Who does not need a declaration?

For now, a declaration is not required for board members, volunteers at school, and interns without work learning contracts. But more schools ask them for a declaration. The school governing body can decide this. Volunteers in the lunch break care must always get a declaration.

Check

The school is responsible for safety and must ensure every employee has a declaration. The school accountant checks this every year. If anything is missing or a declaration is late, the accountant informs the education inspectorate.

Free declaration

Volunteers working with vulnerable people can apply for a free declaration from 1 November 2018. This now also includes volunteers working with pupils at schools. The school governing body must register for this scheme. This can be done at the website www.gratisvog.nl.
