Digitalisation in education.

Digitization is now part of education. From smart boards and laptops to online learning programs, apps and AI: schools use them every day. What is digital literacy and media literacy? What does school do about it and what can you do yourself?

What is digital literacy and media literacy?

Digital literacy is about the knowledge and skills your child needs to keep up in a digital world. At school the focus is on four parts:

  • Basic ICT skills (using laptops and digital programs)
  • Digital information skills (finding reliable information on the internet)
  • Computational thinking (problem solving with technology);
  • Media literacy (being aware, critical and active with media).

Media literacy is more than just using devices. It means that students learn to look critically at images and messages, recognize ads and influencers, and think about their own media use.

Are schools required to give attention to this?

Right now digital literacy is not separate in the law. New core goals for digital literacy and media literacy are being developed. They must be set by law from 2027. Many schools already work on this, helped by national plans to strengthen basic skills. Schools decide themselves how to do this.

How can schools shape digital literacy?

Schools can teach digital skills in different ways:

  • Integrated in existing subjects (for example research for history or making a presentation)
  • As a separate subject;
  • Through project weeks or themes like the week of media literacy;
  • With special lesson programs or digital portfolios;
  • By paying attention to critical viewing of images and news.

Some schools work with tech or discovery labs, robotics, programming or maker education. Other schools choose to train one teacher extra as expert in digital literacy.

How can you think along as a parent?

Do you have questions about digitization at school? Talk to the school or bring up the topic with the school participation council.

Think for example about questions like:

  • Which digital learning tools does the school use and why?
  • How is the privacy of students protected?
  • What is the school’s view on digital literacy?
  • Are there alternatives if parents object to a certain platform?
  • How much teaching time is digital?

What can you do at home?

You also play an important role at home. You can:

  • Talk with your child about what they do online
  • Look together critically at news, videos or influencers
  • Make agreements about screen use
  • Show interest in digital tasks from school.
