Use of ai by students.
AI (artificial intelligence) plays a bigger role at school. More students use tools like ChatGPT or Copilot for their homework or assignments. Schools look for ways to handle this. What is allowed and what is not? And does your child still learn enough when using AI?
How do students use AI?
Many students use AI tools to write or improve texts, make summaries, create practice questions, or get help with difficult topics. AI is also used for presentations, papers, or creative assignments.
Whether this is educational depends on how AI is used. When a student uses AI to brainstorm, get extra explanations, quiz themselves or ask for feedback on their own text, it can be a good support. It helps deepen and check knowledge.
Your child learns less well if AI takes over a whole assignment. Learning happens through practice, repetition, and good feedback. AI can be a tool as long as it supports your child’s thinking and does not replace it.
What is allowed and what is not?
Whether your child can use AI depends on the school policy. Some schools encourage it as a learning tool. Others forbid it (still). Many schools are making policies about AI use. If your child’s school has no policy yet, you can bring this up at school or with the school participation council.
A sensible rule is: a student must do their own work. Just as you cannot copy a whole text from the internet, it is usually not allowed to submit a full AI text as your own work. AI use is not allowed during central exams.
Is using AI plagiarism or cheating?
That depends on the school policy. Plagiarism means copying someone else’s work and pretending it is yours. An AI text is not copied from someone else, but handing in an AI text as your own is usually not allowed.
If the school forbids AI use and a student uses it anyway, there are usually consequences. The school policy explains what these are.
How does school check AI use?
There are AI detection tools, but they are not fully reliable. They can give clues but are usually not clear proof.
Teachers also watch for other signs, like a very different writing style or knowledge level. They can ask a student to explain their work orally. Like with other digital changes, AI asks for changes in schoolwork and tests.
What can you do if your child is accused of using AI?
If your child gets a 1 because the school thinks AI was used, it is important to check:
- Is there clear policy about AI?
- Does it say what measures can be taken?
- Can the teacher prove AI was used?
- A suspicion is usually not strong proof. Talk to the school about it.
How can you as a parent talk about AI?
Stay involved in what your child does. Ask for example:
- Is it allowed to use AI for this task?
- How do you use it exactly?
- Do you check the information AI gives?
Try to listen with curiosity, without judging right away. This helps your child use AI consciously and critically.
Can school force my child to use AI?
Schools decide their own policy. If your child must use AI for an assignment and you have questions, talk to the school. Ask what the learning goal is and if there is an alternative.
Many AI tools advise users to be at least 13 years old. Use by younger children is discouraged. AI use will probably be limited in primary schools.
