Education inspectorate.
The education inspectorate supervises the quality of education on behalf of the ministry for education, culture and science. The education inspectorate also includes signals from parents in their investigations. Within the education inspectorate, special confidential inspectors also work.
Sufficient quality
Based on a risk analysis and any further research, the education inspectorate decides how much supervision a school needs. The supervision that each school receives is tailored. Their research frameworks show how the education inspectorate works, what they assess, and when the education has sufficient quality. They also check the financial health of schools and school governing bodies.
Research frameworks
For several years, the education inspectorate has changed how it assesses the quality of schools. For the supervision of the quality of all schools in the Netherlands, research frameworks are used. The school governing body must show how it arranges quality care for its schools. The school plan is the starting point. The inspectorate then checks at some schools whether the governing body’s findings match the inspector’s findings.
The standard for basic quality is that a governing body and its schools meet the requirements for education quality, quality care, and financial management. The inspectorate can conclude that a school’s basic quality is sufficient, insufficient, or very weak. The inspectorate also considers signals from parents during the investigation. These can be complaints from parents about the school. The inspector can also talk with the school participation council and/or parents to check the described policy.
The education inspectorate and complaints
The education inspectorate does not handle complaints, but parents can report a situation at school. The inspectorate reads this report and adds it to the school’s file. For serious problems related to sexual intimidation, abuse, violence, discrimination, or radicalization, a confidential advisor is available.
