Elective courses mbo.

During the mbo course your child can take optional subjects. What kinds of subjects are these? How much time does the optional part take? And do the results count on the diploma? We explain it here.

The optional part

Every mbo course has three parts: a basic part, a profile part and an optional part. In the optional part your child chooses subjects to widen or deepen knowledge. For example, to make moving on inside mbo or to hbo easier. Or to improve chances on the job market.

Which optional subjects are there?

The optional part includes subjects with lessons about personal development, student traits and communication. The content focuses on your child and their environment. Topics include making choices, taking decisions, ways to work independently and solving problems. Mbo schools decide which optional parts they offer.

How much time does the optional part take?

The optional part is 15 percent of the course. How many hours your child spends on this differs per mbo level. An optional part is 240, 480 or 720 hours. Students doing an entry course, mbo level 1, spend 240 hours on it. For a basic vocational course, mbo level 2, there are 480 hours optional part. And for a professional course mbo level 3 or a middle management course of three years there is even 720 hours to fill with optional parts.

Diploma and switching courses

Does your child pass the mbo course? The grades for the optional part will be on the mbo diploma. Your child also gets a separate certificate showing which optional parts have been completed. Future employers want to know which extra skills have been gained. If your child switches to another course, exemptions for optional subjects already completed with a passing grade are possible.
