Help tools exams with support needs.
Some children cannot do the final exam well because of their disability. In that case, it is often possible to take the exam in a different way. When can you qualify for this? What adjustments can you get? And how do you apply?
Right to exam adjustment
Based on the ‘law against discrimination because of disability or chronic illness,’ your child can get adjustments at the central final exam. The school decides if you can use an aid or an adjustment and arranges this.
The College for Testing and Exams decides which aids are allowed. They follow fixed rules, as explained below.
Aids for central exams
There are special rules for which aids your child can get for central exams and when. This is in the ‘Rules for allowed aids for the central exams.’ This rule is in a brochure that explains what support and adjustments are possible: the brochure candidates with support needs.
Aids for school exams
Your child can also get adjustments or use an aid for school exams. The school decides if and which ones. Usually, the same rules as for the central exam apply. The PTA exam regulation may allow differences.
When are adjustments and aids possible?
There are rules about when your child can get adjustments or aids at the exam. It is possible in at least these situations:
- Having a disability or handicap
- Being dyslexic
- Having dyscalculia
- Being ill during the exam year
- Having a different mother tongue than Dutch
In other situations, exams can sometimes be adjusted too. Usually, 30 minutes extra time can be given. The school decides if this is possible for your child.
Conditions for aids and extra time
A professional statement is needed for aids or extra time. Also, the help your child gets during the exam should not differ much from the help your child got during school time. If your child asks for 30 minutes extra time because of dyslexia, the school checks if your child already got this time for regular tests.
Applying for exam adjustments
Do you want to apply for aids or extra time for your child? You can only do this through the school. This is officially called ‘applying for provisions for the exam.’ The school talks with the College for Testing and Exams about what is possible. The Education Inspectorate monitors the quality of exams and rules compliance. That is why exam adjustments are reported by the school and the College for Testing and Exams to the Education Inspectorate.
