Bullying in further vocational education.

Bullying happens everywhere, also in mbo. You want the bullying to stop so your child can go to school with a good feeling. What rules exist about bullying? And where can parents get support or information? We list it for you.

Bullying

Bullying comes in many forms: from name-calling to gossiping and from physical violence to exclusion. Since social media appeared, bullying also happens a lot online. Think of threats, creating fake accounts, sharing unwanted images, or excluding from online groups. The problem with this online world is that even if the bullying ends, you can still find the messages. In short: it is important that mbo does as much as possible to prevent, notice and address bullying.

What must the mbo school do about bullying?

Mbo schools must follow the Arbowet. It says schools must protect their staff and students against psychosocial work stress. Bullying is part of that. Every mbo school must have a trusted person your child can go to. The education inspector checks if this person is easy to reach for students and parents. And whether the mbo school keeps a safe place. Many mbo schools also have a bullying protocol. It has clear rules about how students and staff must treat each other with respect.

What can you do as a parent?

Is your child at mbo and being bullied? Then it is important to act quickly. It is most important to give attention, support and safety. Give your child space to talk about bad experiences and feelings. Talk about it. Let your child decide what happens and do not make decisions without including your child. Explain that it is important to inform the school about the bullying so you can work together. Contact the trusted person at school: they know what to do next.
