Required subjects.

At primary school your child gets subjects required by law. These subjects are described in core objectives. All children in the Netherlands get these required subjects at school.

Core objectives

The required subjects at primary school are described in core objectives. You can find these in the core objectives booklet from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The subjects described in the core objectives are:

  • Dutch and in Friesland also Frisian
  • English
  • Math
  • Orientation on yourself and the world (for example geography, history, lessons about nature and technology, citizenship, religion, traffic lessons and government)
  • Artistic orientation (for example music, drawing and crafts)
  • Physical education (for example gym lessons)

Religion or philosophy

At a special school students usually get religion lessons or philosophical educational subjects. The board of a special primary school can make these subjects required.

Following your child’s development

Many parents like to get to know what and how their child learns language and math. This is often different from how parents learned themselves. Parents can follow their child’s development in language and math well with the booklets of ‘snap your child!‘. Per grade, concepts and methods of language and math are explained to parents. There are also tips on how to practice playfully at home with your child.
