One third of schools also closed today due to the winter weather.
One in three schools is closed today because of the winter weather. That is many more than yesterday. Then only one in eight schools was closed. Especially secondary schools are mostly closed or switched to online education. This appears from a quick survey among parents done today by the Landelijk Ouderpanel of Ouders & Onderwijs.
Secondary schools mostly close doors
The survey shows that 43.9% of the secondary schools are completely closed today and 23.3% of the primary schools. Among secondary schools, many work with an adjusted schedule (18.3%), online lessons, or other solutions (23.3%). Only 14.4% of secondary schools remained open, while 69.3% of primary schools stayed open.
Regional differences
There are also regional differences in school closures. In North Brabant, for example, 48% of schools are closed, while in North Holland (16%) and Gelderland (18%) a much smaller part of schools is closed. In the provinces of Utrecht (42%) and South Holland (40%), many schools are closed.
Parents generally positive
Parents are generally positive about the decision to close schools or switch to an adjusted schedule or online lessons. Many parents say it was dangerous on the road this morning and they are happy their child could stay home. Parents also hope that schools can give clear information in time about the follow-up measures for the rest of the week.
About Ouders & Onderwijs
Ouders & Onderwijs is an organization for all parents with school-age children. We help parents with tailored advice and a listening ear, provide reliable information, and represent parents in politics, education, and the media. Through our Landelijk Ouderpanel, we know what parents think about important topics in education.
A total of 479 parents participated in this survey, with children in primary education, secondary education, or mbo. Because this is a quick survey conducted within a few hours, it only provides an indication of the situation in the country.
