Budget day: no extra money for tackling the teacher shortage.
No extra money is included in the budget for the ministry of education to tackle the teacher shortage and high workload. With different actions, Ouders & Onderwijs asked together with unions for extra money to invest in the people who give our children good education. In March this year, 40,000 teachers stood on Malieveld with a cry for more money. But also recently, with the action #TeacherWanted, we ask for attention to this problem.
Lobke Vlaming, director of Ouders & Onderwijs: ‘More and more parents worry about missed classes and education quality. Our children have the right to good education, so more must be done.’
Teacher Shortage
The teacher shortage in primary education is 1,700 full-time jobs this year and nearly 5,000 jobs in 2024. Secondary education also struggles with a shortage. In addition, it is very hard in this sector to find the right and qualified teachers for specific subjects. Because of the shortage, teachers also experience a high workload. Education organizations worry a lot about this.
Overcrowded Classes And No Education
The effects in class are big. There are situations where children have no teacher for 2 days and parents have to arrange unexpected care. Or classes with 59 pupils. These are just some examples. Ouders & Onderwijs held a survey among parents in March, where parents said they see more money and a better image of the profession as the most important long-term solutions for the shortage.
And Now?
As long as politics does not provide extra money, the problems for parents and children will continue. The House of Representatives still has to debate and vote on the education budget, but big changes usually do not happen. Ouders & Onderwijs continues to take action together with parents, teachers, and pupils. It is very important that minister Slob sees that extra investments are urgently needed.
