Compulsory education during school closure?.

Since The Cabinet Decided To Close Schools Until The May Holidays, Parents Are Asked For A Lot. Sometimes It Is Not Possible To Meet All The School's Requests. What About The Duty To Attend School And When Is It Absence?

Absence

The situation for absence is now different than normal. There is no obligation for schools to report absence when a student, for example, does not participate in digital classes and assignments. Because the goal is that education continues in some way, it is up to the school to oversee and take action. The school will contact the parent and/or student to find out why they cannot participate in the program. As a parent, explain what is difficult and talk together. Sometimes the work is just too much, online class times do not fit the schedule of other family members, the instructions are not clear, or there is another reason why it is not possible. For many issues, a solution is possible in cooperation with the school, so it is not considered absence when not everything is fulfilled.

Report

In some cases, a school chooses to make an ‘other absence’ report after consulting with a truancy officer. They then have serious concerns about a student and cannot reach the parents or the student. The truancy officer and the school decide what measures to take to encourage attending education. Note, this is about encouragement, because enforcement of the law is not possible while schools are closed. With this report, truancy officers are used to help locate and support students who have gone out of the school’s reach. So it may happen that a truancy officer will come to check. As a parent, know that this is not enforcement where a fine might be issued. Cooperation is not required. The truancy officer works for the municipality, which can also take its own steps to create tailored solutions like daycare, education, or guidance outside the home. You as a parent can also directly contact the school or your municipality to discuss what options are available. It is important to agree on how the school can keep contact with parent and student.
