Exam result: this is what parents can expect.

11 June 2025 News

On Thursday 12 June, secondary school students receive their final exam results. For many children (and their parents), this is a tense moment. One student gets good news, while another is told they need a retake. What does that mean exactly? And what can you do as a parent?

Passed?

If your child passed, it is of course time to celebrate first! Then there are some things to think about. For example, handing in school books, a diploma ceremony, and of course making plans for after the summer holiday. Will your child continue their education, take a gap year, or work?

For many who passed, the summer holiday starts early. Official holidays begin this year from 5 July (varies by region), but those who passed often get time off earlier.

Did not pass? This is what you can do

If your child failed, they can sometimes retake an exam. Retakes are in the second period, from Tuesday 17 June 2025.

If retaking is not possible or your child did not pass after retaking, there are other options. Repeating a year is one possibility. Sometimes switching to another level or learning path suits your child better. Talk with your child and school about this and see what fits the situation and your child best.

What can you do as a parent?

Exam results are tense, also for parents. You can support your child by giving space for all emotions without judging or putting pressure.

Especially with a disappointing result, it is important to be patient, keep the conversation open, and look at next steps.

Practical support can also mean a lot. For example, help with planning or studying for a retake, contacting the school, or helping to look at other options for next school year.
