New brochure about Veilig Thuis reports and Tailored Education.

3 April 2025 News

Ouders & Onderwijs regularly receives signals from parents about reports to Veilig Thuis when parent and school do not agree about tailored education. The national government has clearly explained again in a brochure that such a report to Veilig Thuis is not the intention and does not help in these situations.

Useful brochure for parents

It can happen that parents and school do not agree about tailored education, for example about placement in special education or what support is needed. Disagreement about these matters is not a reason for a report to Veilig Thuis.

To provide more clarity, the national government has developed a new brochure. In the brochure, you can read about:

  • Why a report is made to Veilig Thuis if a child does not go to school
  • The role of Veilig Thuis in tailored education
  • What exactly happens after a report
  • What rights parents and children have

This brochure is a nice result of years of effort by, among others, Balans, Ouders & Onderwijs, and other parent interest organizations. The brochure is specially written for parents but also offers answers for (education) professionals.

Problems in tailored education known earlier

Ouders & Onderwijs pointed out the problems around reports to Veilig Thuis in tailored education earlier in the evaluation about tailored education, seen from the parents’ view. In this, Ouders & Onderwijs asks, for example, for better control of following the duty of care by schools, smaller classes, and better support at school.

Every child has the right to a safe environment

Every child has the right to a safe place to grow up. School plays an important role in this. They must be alert to signs of child abuse or domestic violence. If the school suspects domestic violence, they must follow the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Reporting Code.
