New information guide about the choice for a secondary school.

4 December 2019 News

It is an important step for children and parents. The choice of a school for secondary education. You can read all about it in the newly published information guide by Sardes, the research and advisory agency in the field of education, care, and upbringing.

Research

The digitally accessible guide covers the results of the research that Ouders & Onderwijs did via the Landelijk Ouderpanel about school choice. It showed that for more than half of the parents, the choice of a secondary school goes without major problems. However, parents would like to see a wider offer of schools in the region.

Where

The place where you live matters a lot when choosing a school. In Amsterdam, pupils in group 7 already start visiting open days and thinking about twelve preferred schools. While in the Gelderse municipality of Lochem it is simpler, because there is one school available within twelve kilometers.

Bottlenecks

Although the problems with choosing a school are limited, there are still some bottlenecks. Parents experience the lottery system and the limited offer of Tailored Education as negative. They also find it annoying when a child with a double advice is placed at the lowest level. The distance between home and school and providing honest information during open days are also seen as obstacles.

Checklist

Besides the research, the guide discusses cooperation between primary and secondary schools, the law on final testing po, and Tailored Education. To give parents tips, Ouders & Onderwijs has a checklist on the website, which lists some considerations for making a school choice.
