New: learning through play about a condition.

14 December 2022 News

On average, three children in each class have a chronic condition. This is why Stichting Zorgeloos naar School developed a free game called Achteruit Vooruit. What it is and how to get it are explained in this article.

Achteruit Vooruit

An invisible chronic condition, such as migraine or chronic fatigue, can sometimes cause misunderstanding in the class. Why can you arrive late at school? Why do you not have to join gym? These are questions children can have when a classmate has different rules due to illness. Talking about this is not always easy.

Achteruit Vooruit is a game developed for the upper grades of primary school. The pupils play in groups and experience what it is like to live with a chronic illness. Sudden tiredness, missing gym class due to pain or an operation: all challenges the pupils face in this game. The pupils end with a joint reflection where they can talk about their experiences. Achteruit Vooruit gives children the chance to ask questions and creates more openness about invisible chronic conditions.

Lesson Plan

The game is meant to be played in class and lasts about 40 minutes. Stichting Zorgeloos naar School also made a matching lesson plan. It describes step by step how the teacher can organize the game in class. Do you want this game to be played in your child’s class? Share this article with the teacher!

Presentation Game

If your child has a chronic condition and wants to tell classmates more about it, the presentation game can help. Your child explains to the class in a fun and interactive way what the illness does to the body and the mental stress that comes with it. It gives space to explain why your child sometimes has different rules, comes late to school, or sometimes does not come at all.
