Petition for smaller classes.

24 September 2020 News

A full classroom, where personal attention for the student is missing. It is a nightmare for many parents, teachers and students. To put class size high on the political agenda, Ouders & Onderwijs started a petition together with the Algemene Onderwijsbond and the Lerarencollectief.

Already 10,000 people have signed the petition. That is quite a high number of people who clearly support the petition’s goals. The aim is a class size of maximum 21 students in 2025. Parents, students and educational staff believe students perform better if classes are smaller. It is also expected that more personal attention for students makes it easier to realize Tailored Education.

Lower Workload

Moreover, teachers themselves say they prefer to work with smaller classes. Algemene Onderwijsbond chair Eugenie Stolk thinks smaller classes will reduce teachers’ workload. ‘Because of this, fewer teachers will drop out and the profession will be more attractive.’ Stolk reasons: ‘You can wait until there are enough teachers, or you can attract and keep more teachers by having smaller classes. We want to start in schools in disadvantaged areas, because the effect is greatest there.’
