Reading aloud: cozy and a nice rest moment.

11 December 2024 News

Before your child learns to read by themselves, it is important to read aloud regularly. This is good for your child's language development. Do you ever read to your child? How often do you do this? And why?

The Landelijk Ouderpanel asked parents with a child aged 0 to 4 years what they think of reading aloud. Parents see reading aloud as a nice moment of rest and a fixed part of the bedtime routine.

A few minutes every day

Most parents in the study read aloud to their child every day (66.3%). A smaller group of parents does not read aloud every day, but several times a week. More than half of the parents read to their child for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Almost a third of the parents do this even a little longer.

Learned young, done old?

Many parents (58.1%) read aloud to their child in the first six months. Almost 90% of the parents surveyed started reading aloud before their child’s first birthday.

“I read aloud hoping he will keep reading all his life”.
