Record Number Of Schools Participating In Fruit Project.

27 November 2019 News

Never before have so many primary schools taken part in the EU-Schoolfruit and vegetable program. A total of 519,908 pupils from 3,026 primary schools in the Netherlands will receive fruit and vegetables at school three times a week in the near future.

Stimulus

EU-Schoolfruit encourages children to eat fruit and vegetables together in class. Participating primary schools receive three servings of fruit and vegetables for all pupils each week for 20 weeks. Thanks to funding from the European Union, this is completely free.

Goal

The goal is to help children eat the recommended amount of vitamins per day. For children aged 4 to 8, that is 100 to 150 grams of vegetables and 1.5 pieces of fruit. For children aged 8 to 12, it is 150 to 200 grams of vegetables and 2 pieces of fruit. Another aim is for children to taste different types of fruit and vegetables. This way, they get to know special flavors and textures.

Subscription continuation

Schools can sign up for the project every year from early September. After 20 weeks, the school can choose to continue the school fruit subscription as a paid service. The website of Ouders & Onderwijs has tips for parents to help the school teach pupils a healthy lifestyle together.
