Safe internet use.
At home, on the go and in the classroom. There is no avoiding it, because internet is everywhere nowadays. Research shows that most Dutch parents see it as an enrichment but want to make clear agreements with their child about online behavior.
Safety
The safety of children on the internet is a concern for 1 in 3 parents. To help young people learn about online safety, parents see a responsibility for themselves, but also for schools (63%), the government (55%) and/or tech companies (36%). The percentages come from research by Ipsos among parents of young people aged 12 to 15, using online interviews with a representative sample of over 500 parents.
At home
The figures show that a lot is already happening at home. Parents often talk with children about online safety, because 9 in 10 parents bring up the topic at least once a month. Most (70%) also have rules with their children about online behavior, mainly about screen time and checking the history of their online activities. However, control can improve. Because 26% of parents say they have little insight into their children’s online activities.
Knowledge
How do you make sure children have the right knowledge? And what information is important? Parents especially find it crucial that their children learn about cyberbullying, data protection and privacy. Almost half (49%) of parents consider themselves well informed about children’s online safety.
Lesson package
A lesson package is recommended at school. For example from InternetHelden. This lesson package contains clear tips for teachers, a toolkit for parents and digital lessons for the classroom. In addition, various workshops for teachers and special parents’ evenings are organized. Mention it at your child’s school.
