Whether or not there is an education strike on 6 November.
Contrary to earlier reports, the strike on 6 November will go ahead. Education unions AOb and CNV call on their members in primary and secondary education to stop working and take action. Parents & Onderwijs also believes the strike should continue.
On Friday, it became known that the employers and education unions agreed on a proposal from Minister Arie Slob for primary and secondary education. There will be 460 million euros extra for education. With the promise of extra money, the nationwide education strike was called off by the unions. This led to much criticism from members and other unions. They call to continue actions on Wednesday.
One-time 460 million euros extra for education is not a solution
The extra 460 million euros reported on Friday is a one-time amount. However, structural money is needed to guarantee good education for our children. One-time money cannot be used for investments such as more hands in the classroom, structural reduction of workload, or improving work conditions.
‘No matter how good it is that extra money is available for the short term; there must be a long term solution.’ Lobke Vlaming, Director Parents & Onderwijs.
The unions therefore distance themselves from the agreement made on Friday. They resume their call to strike. Strike or not, Minister Slob has confirmed that the 460 million euros promised will still go to education.
What does this mean for parents?
After a weekend full of confusion, it is the talk of many school playgrounds today: should my child go to school on Wednesday? The yes – no – and now yes strike again causes confusion among parents. It is not clear what this will mean for individual schools. Many schools will reconsider today. Then a final decision will be made and the school will inform all parents.
