Profile schools.

Secondary schools can offer an extra program besides the regular one. For example, schools with a sports class, bilingual education, culture profile schools, or technasia. These schools are also called profile schools or schools with a profile class. Discover the features of these different types of schools or classes.

Bilingual education

Bilingual education is for students who want to focus internationally. Most schools offer English as a second language, but some profile schools offer German.

In the lower years of havo and vwo, at least 50 percent of the lessons are in the other language. In vmbo, this is at least 30 percent. In the upper years, bilingual schools still focus a lot on the other language, but they prepare students for the Dutch final exam. Bilingual education is offered at vmbo, havo, and vwo. Skills tests may be taken for admission.

Culture profile schools

Culture profile schools are profile schools where arts and culture have a leading place. This means arts and culture are often on the timetable, several art disciplines are covered, and art subjects cooperate with other subjects as much as possible.

The curriculum includes many cultural activities outside school. Culture profile schools are not just for top talents. Students interested in arts and culture can also join. There are now 40 culture profile schools.

Technasium

A technasium is a profile school for havo, atheneum, or gymnasium where the subject research and design is offered as an exam subject in one of the science profiles.

This subject differs from others because gaining experience, developing skills, and applying knowledge in a real-life setting are central. Students design a technical product for this subject.

This involves current scientific and technical questions from real clients. The client is usually a local company. Technasium schools work in regional networks of about 5 secondary schools around a university or college. The Technasium foundation ensures quality control. There are about 70 technasia in 14 networks now.

Profile class with sports

Some secondary schools offer a separate sports class. In a sports class, students do more sports than in other classes. Often a motivation or practical test is required.

Top sports talent schools

Top sports talent schools are united in an organization of 30 top sports talent schools in secondary education.

Top sports talent schools can offer students with a top sports talent status a tailored education program. This helps them combine education with their sports career. Getting this status is done through the sports federation based on certain criteria set by the federation.

DAMU schools

DAMU schools have a special focus on dance and/or music. Here, students can combine school with professional contemporary dance or music education. This prepares them better for higher professional education. These schools can ask for admission conditions, like passing an audition.
