Student monitoring system.

Most schools use a student monitoring system. Schools choose a student monitoring system that fits the school's vision. What is included in the student monitoring system? And what access do parents have to this system? Is AI also used within the student monitoring system?

What is a student monitoring system?

A student monitoring system is a system that schools use to track students’ development and performance, both individually and in groups. The goal is to tailor education better to the needs of students and to measure progress. There are special student monitoring system tests, but also results from method tests and developments in language, math, and sometimes social-emotional development can be recorded. Also, the results of the secondary school transition tests are recorded in the student monitoring system.

The most common providers of a student monitoring system are: Boom test education, Bureau ICE, CED group, Cito, Diataal. These providers offer both a student monitoring system and approved student monitoring system tests. Another well-known student monitoring system is Parnassys.

Is a student monitoring system mandatory?

Schools must inform parents about their child’s progress. Only primary schools are required to have a student monitoring system. But many secondary schools also use one.

Can a school choose its own tests?

Schools can choose which student monitoring system they use and which approved student monitoring system tests they use. In group 1 and 2 of primary school, no tests are given, but from group 3, tests in Dutch, math, and arithmetic are mandatory. Other tests are optional and a school choice. The student monitoring system tests must be approved by the college for tests and exams. How often, how many tests, and when tests are given is up to the school.

What information can be in a student monitoring system?

The goal of a student monitoring system is to track the progress and development of a student. Relevant information can be in the system. Often, the following is included: results of student monitoring system tests, method test results, skills, behavior, progress, and observations. The information in the student monitoring system is part of the student file.

What access do parents have to the student monitoring system?

In principle, the student monitoring system is for the school. The school decides what information parents can directly access through these systems. Some schools give parents full access: absences, grades, late arrivals, missed homework, forgotten books, etc. Other schools choose not to provide access and report to parents a few times a year.

You always have the right to view and get a copy of the student file if you ask for it.

When to share grades?

Schools must inform parents about their child’s progress. How and when they do this is up to the school. Schools decide how they want to inform parents about progress. This means parents do not have to have direct access to all grades or get notified at the same time as their child when a new grade arrives.

Schools can also decide when (days and times) they make grades available. At the same time, parents can think about whether they want to have access anytime and anywhere.

To reduce stress and pressure on students, a school can agree that grades are not shown on weekends or evenings.
