The vocational education pathway.
What does your child learn in a BBL course? How is the time divided between school and work hours? Does your child get a salary? And what else do you need to know? Here you find the answers to these important questions for mbo students.
Work and learn
The abbreviation BBL means Vocational Guided Learning Pathway. Students mainly work and go to school one or two days. The focus is on practice. They learn mostly by doing and experiencing. BBL is a mix of work and learning. Your child must be at least 16 years old to follow a BBL course. Your child must also have a job at a recognized training company.
Study load
The study load for a BBL course is 850 hours per school year. These hours are divided into school hours and vocational practice training. The school hours are officially called supervised education hours. These are the hours your child spends at school for lessons and projects. In a BBL course, your child gets 200 supervised education hours each year. Most hours your child works at the recognized training company. These are the vocational practice training hours. Your child learns to work in practice. This is at least 610 hours each year.
Choice
Why should your child choose a BBL course? The advantage of a BBL course is that the student learns by working. Your child learns by gaining experience in practice. Does your child not like sitting in school classes? Then a BBL course will probably suit your child better. Besides, your child gets a salary for the working days.
Salary
During the BBL program, your child has a work contract with the training company. That means your child also gets a salary. For a BBL program, the salary for 18- to 20-year-olds is lower than the legal minimum wage. The training company pays students from 21 years the minimum wage at least. The government decided this to increase the number of training places. On the overview page of the national government you can read how much your child is entitled to.
Student finance
If your child follows a BBL program, there is no right to student finance or a public transport student card. For more information, see Stage agreement.
Changing program
What if your child has made the wrong choice? And still wants to switch to a BOL program? That can be done but must be discussed with the trainer. Ask the mbo institution about this.
