Behavior problems.
All children and young people can be difficult sometimes. They listen badly, get very angry, or do not keep agreements. This is annoying, but also very normal. Sometimes the problems are so bad and last so long that a child gets into trouble. He or she may be sent out of class often or even suspended. It is also hard to make friends. Parents can also feel they cannot handle it anymore. Then there can be a behavior problem.
Behavior disorder
We talk about behavior problems when there is:
- stubborn and defiant behavior (arguing with adults or refusing to listen)
- irritable or angry behavior (being mad or having fits of rage);
- antisocial behavior (fighting, lying, skipping school, not caring about punishment);
- busy and impulsive behavior (being restless, disturbing others, doing first and thinking later).
We only call it behavior problems when one or more types of troubling behavior last for several months and have clear negative effects for the child or the surroundings. A disorder can only be identified after careful research and a diagnosis by a qualified professional. The most common behavior disorders are:
- ADHD: these children have trouble with attention, concentration and planning and are hyperactive and impulsive.
- Autism spectrum disorder: these children have trouble with social communication, have limited areas of interest and show repeated behavior.
