Have research done yourself.

Parents can also have research done on learning problems outside the school. When you think research can give more clarity about your child's learning problems, but the school does not want to cooperate, you can consider having research done yourself. You can go to a psychologist or pedagogue for this.

Duty of care budget from school

Every school receives money for extra support and research for students with learning problems. Schools manage their own duty of care budget. They decide when they want and can have a child researched.

Costs

If you decide to have research done yourself, you cannot claim the school’s duty of care budget. The costs are then for you. For (suspected) disorders, the costs for research of clients up to 18 years old are reimbursed by the municipality through the mental health care system. A referral is required. This can be a referral from the general or youth doctor and in some municipalities from the Child and Family Center, district, or basic team. In some cases, the costs for research and treatment of clients over 18 years with a (suspected) DSM-V disorder are reimbursed by the health insurer. For information about policy conditions, we advise you to contact your health insurer.

Talk about it first

It is important to discuss with the school beforehand what they will do with the results of extra research. Will they give extra support if the research shows this?

Sharing research

Parents (and student) are informed first about the results of research. They may decide whether or not the research is shared with the school. This is also called the blocking right.
