Home schooling.
In some countries, parents can teach their child at home. In the Netherlands, this is not allowed easily. When can you teach your child at home? What rules apply? How do you set up home education? And what about supervision?
When can you give home education?
You can only give home education in the Netherlands if your child has a duty of care exemption. There are three exceptions when home education can be given:
- If parents have a traveling lifestyle.
- If there is no school nearby with your belief system.
- If your child cannot physically or mentally attend school.
Conditions for home education
To give home education, you need an exemption from the duty of care. There are no rules about how or what to teach. No one watches the quality. There is a quality mark for home education, but it is not required. You can use the quality rules as a guide.
How to give home education
There is no set way to give home education. You can choose many ways and mixes. Some families use the same materials as schools. Others use project learning, more hands-on work, or natural learning.
Choose what suits your child best. You can use many materials and sources from the internet, distance learning, school methods, experts, family, and home education groups. On the website of the Dutch Association for Home Education, you find much information and tips.
Is there supervision on home education?
No. The education inspectorate watches schools, but not home education.
Who pays for home education?
If your child goes to school, the government pays for education. If your child goes to a private school or you teach your child yourself, you pay for education.
